Editorial: A word from Grass Dad

Grass Dad Says: It’s Okay to Love Your Lawn!

Hi neighbor! It’s me, Grass Dad, just hanging out on my gorgeous, plush lawn, applying zinc sunblock to my nose only, listening to the sprinkler’s hiss and enjoying the feel of this sweet, sweet Kentucky bluegrass under my bare feet. You can’t even tell that my kids tear through the grass like a pack of wild elephants, right? Come here, crouch down with me. Can you feel how dense that is? That’s some high-quality turf, let me tell you.

By the way, can I grab you a drink? I can tell you’re a Grass Dad at heart, too. Cheers to that. I remember when I started out, thinking I’d just pick up some seeds to fill my patchy lawn, and suddenly I’m over here measuring the perfect height of each little blade. You’ll get there one day, too. You just need a Grass Dad like me to show you the way.

Wait, wait, did you say you don’t care about your lawn? That mowing is just a chore you have to do on Saturdays instead of watching the game? I don’t think you even realize what a treasure you have here. Take it from Grass Dad: Grass is rad and it ain’t no fad. I could do this all day.

But seriously, though, sit down here and look around! Natural grass looks and feels great. It’s the perfect spot for kids to wrestle and play, for the dog to roam and for me to practice my yoga. Can you imagine doing that in a dirt yard? Grass cushions us when we fall, is soft and cozy to lie on and, man, it even smells good. Get a whiff of a freshly mowed lawn—is there anything better?

Also, did you know that natural lawns are even environmentally friendly? Grass absorbs pollutants from the air, cleans it and adds oxygen. It keeps temperatures cooler, too! It’s why I love to sit on the grass on a hot summer day; the temperatures can be up to 14 degrees lower on the lawn than on the asphalt. Lie down here—do you feel the difference? Cool as a cucumber!

Nothing gets me on fire more than some lawn lore. And speaking of fire—you guessed it! A well-maintained lawn can even help protect your home from wildfires. It’s also great for the soil, preventing erosion, cleaning groundwater and keeping the soil loose and open, making it easier to absorb water and nutrients.

And, as you know, caring for the lawn is some world-class cardio. I just pull up my tube socks, tie my white running shoes, pop on my “Grass Is Good” baseball cap, put on a little Yacht Rock and get ready to make some sharp lines with my push mower. Add a nice breeze and a cold drink, and you’ve got yourself a great afternoon. And when it’s all done, you can look over your little green empire and think, “I did good.”

I tell you, there’s nothing better.
